Curel: Itch Defense

This is a new lotion that someone recommended to me through email.

Curel is meant to be a very good lotion for eczema sufferers. It is highly spoken of and after going through two bottles, I can see why. It is a great moisturizer for one with eczema. It  is not a cure, but as I said, it works wonders at moisturizing, which in due time can help to heal open sores.

There are a few different versions of Curel. I tried the Itch Defense, which is for people either with eczema or other sensitive skin conditions. I wanted to try a different bottle that is directed solely towards eczema, however, when I ordered it, they accidentally sent me another bottle of the Itch Defense, which is why I have tried two bottles. Lol.

Anywho, let's get to why this is an awesome lotion :)

Why Curel: Itch Defense is so Awesome

For one, it is accepted by the National Eczema Association–Something I was not aware of before. There are a few lotions that are approved by the NEA, and after learning about them, I plan on trying those next.

It is fragrance free, which is always great. This eczema lotion is also dermatologist tested, allergist tested, and pediatrician tested (Gentle enough for BABIES). It does not sting. I had no problems placing it on open sores. I usually don't have eczema on my hands, but lately they have been breaking out really bad and I have had a lot of open sores on them. I just rub the lotion in and it goes on nice and smoothly and is also pain free :)

The lotion is white/cream colored and is VERY SOFT. It kind of smells like… oatmeal? Nonetheless, it smells really nice. Curel is suppose to relieve dry skin and flare ups, so the oatmeal makes sense.

It lingers on the skin after you put it on, but not in a bad way. Some lotions linger in more annoying ways, but this one does not annoy me. You can just tell it is there. It is not too thick and not too thin. This lotion really is perfect in that aspect. I can see people using it during both the cold and hotter seasons–I have kind of grown addicted to it =P

Do I Recommend?

As I said earlier, it, like many others is not a cure for eczema. But It definitely will help in good ways.

It is a great moisturizer that can help heal sore spots. For moisturizing purposes, I would recommend it to others. It is not overly expensive. I think it is like 2 dollars more than the Vaseline Moisturizer I reviewed a while back that I was crazy about. Honestly, after using this for so long, I don't want to go back to the Vaseline one. Not saying anything bad about the Vaseline lotion, because it is an amazing lotion itself. I just have grown really fond of this particular moisturizer. It seems to have a good balance all around that I have not found in any other lotion so far.

As I mentioned, there are multiple versions of the Curel lotion. You may want to shop around and try a different version. In all, Curel is one of the better lotions I have come across and has ratings that go through the roof. Check it out!

Sarna Sensitive Lotion

I am not sure if it is called Sensitive Sarna or Sarna Sensitive, but it is all the same, right?  ^_^

To start off, I have found that Sarna Sensitive Lotion works better once you have your eczema under control. During break outs, it is nice and cool, but I think it works a lot better once your skin is back under your control and you need a moisturizer to help keep it looking and feeling nice. If you want to use it or something like it during a break out, I would suggest using the Vaseline Hypoallergenic Moisturizer because these two lotions are relatively the same, with the exception that Sarna is designed with eczema in mind and the Vaseline lotion is not.

The Vaseline moisturizer comes in a much larger bottle for about 5 dollars. Sarna is 7.5 fluid ounces and is about 13 dollars. I do like it as much as I like the Vaseline moisturizer, if not more. But if money comes into play, I would stick with the vaseline moisturizer.

You can read the Vaseline Hypoallergenic Moisturizer here.

Sarna is Dermatologist Recommended

One of the great things about Sarna, as I mentioned earlier, is that it is made with eczema in mind. Sarna Sensitive Lotion is steroid and fragrance free. Therefore, it is dermatologist recommended. Woo hoo!

Apart from those three important factors, the lotion itself is very relieving. It is white and has a soft texture to it. When you put it on, it is cool. It is not greasy nor does it leave a weird after affect feeling on your hands or skin. It does not smell funky. It moreso smells like a lotion that is there to help you. It smells a lot like that of the Vaseline Hypoallergenic Moisturizer. The two lotions are a lot a like, which is why I keep comparing them to one another.

A few more pros of this lotion is that it doesn't sting in any way. It is not heavy on your skin. It would make for a great spring/summer lotion. As I like to stress to everyone, it is better to use a thicker lotion during the winter. However, it is not a requirement. I, myself, still use thinner lotions during the winter. Especially if they work and feel great.

Anti-Itch Eczema Lotion?

This eczema lotion is advertised an anti-itch lotion that has 1% Pramoxine Hydrochloride in it. I think Sarna is a great lotion for eczema, but as for it being "anti-itch", I would disagree with that. Although it is a very wonderful moisturizing lotion, it did not once stop my itch.

Sarna is Jocelyn Recommended

=P I would recommend Sarna to someone with eczema, however, if you spend a lot of money on your skin and are on a tight budget, I would suggest sticking with the Vaseline lotion that I talked about above. They are not 100% the same, but are a lot alike.

I do like this eczema lotion very much and I would definitely buy another bottle in a heart beat. Therefore, I would recommend this product to those of you who look for different things to try for your skin.

Please Note:

However, if you are looking for something to heal your skin, this is not the lotion to buy. This lotion simply just makes for a great moisturizer to help you keep your skin moisturized and clear. It most definitely will not heal your skin. You will need to find a way to get your skin back under your control and THEN use Sarna to help keep it that way.

Vaseline Intensive Rescue Moisturizer

I came about this lotion randomly when walking in store. I can never help but go down the lotion isle to hopefully find something that looks interesting, is cheap, and may possibly help my eczema skin. On this day that I decided to take a stroll down lotion lane, I found this vaseline moisturizer and let me tell you, I love it!

View Your Vaseline Options

It Has All The Pluses

To start off,

this lotion is Fragrance Free. Yay!
this lotion is non-greasy. Double yay!
this lotion is hypoallergenic. Triple yay!

Just by looking at the bottle and reading all three of those, I was bout ready to snatch it up, and I did ^_^

Honestly, the hypoallergenic part is what really bought me. For those who may not fully understand what hypoallergenic means: it is a lotion that will not cause an allergic reaction (most of the time). With my skin, everything seems to agitate it, which is why I was really drawn to this particular product.

The Purpose Behind This Lotion

The purpose behind this lotion is to heal dry skin without the feeling of "sticky" or "greasy". As the bottle reads, "Its unique formula accelerates skin's healing process by tripling skin's moisture reserves instantly."

And then it has check marks that read "Repairs & softens", "24 hours of therapeutic moisture", and "for dry to very dry skin."

To be honest, I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this product–apart from the fact that it is not meant for eczema and will most likely not cure your skin. This is just a really wonderful moisturizer that has never had a negative impact on my skin.

Great for Summer

When buying eczema creams and lotions, it is best to have a thick moisturizer for the winter and a thin moisturizer for the summer. This moisturizer is definitely not heavy on the skin and is something that would work wonders for someone with eczema. From personal experience, if I wear thick lotions during the hotter seasons, I tend to sweat more, which is not a good thing.

More Vaseline Intensive Rescue Info

Ingredients:

The ingredients aren't much different from the average lotion or moisturizer. I have not come across anything that could be harmful to your body or skin.

Money versus Value:

Your definitely get what you pay for when you purchase this product. I bought it a couple times and each time it averages between $5 and $7 and you get a large 24.5 fl oz bottle. (That is big compared to some moisturizers you buy for eczema).

The Smell:

If you have read any of my other eczema reviews, you will find that I love commenting on the smells. I guess smell is something that matters to me and if anyone else happens to be like me, they may want to know too. You never know. =P

Anyways, the smell is not disturbing like other eczema lotions I have reviewed, such as Dermarest. It is a nice, calm smell. I don't really know what to describe it like, but I personally love it and it is one of the reasons I like to put this lotion on so much.

Texture:

This lotion is white and creamy. When you put it on it is very gentle, very soft, and cool. I wish I had more words to describe it because this lotion is truly awesome! After putting it on, it doesn't leave any nasty after-feels. Your skin actually feels soft.

Recommended to Everyone

I would recommend this product to anyone who suffers from eczema. I have used it all over my body, after showers, before bed, and randomly throughout the day. I have not once gotten a bad reaction.

I would also recommend this product to anyone who has dry skin or simply wants a nice moisturizer. You never know, if you end up trying it, maybe your friend could benefit from it as well. =)

Aveeno Active Naturals Collodial Oatmeal Bath

Aveeno colloidal oatmealAbout a month ago, I was out all day and I had been sweating and as we all know, sweat aggravates eczema.  So it's safe to say that my skin was really aggravated on this day.  I can't help but scratch a lot of the time and I scratched the back of my knees and the crease of my elbow and under my arms so bad that I didn't even want to move.  I knew I needed to take a shower but I really didn't want to deal with the pain.  I figured I would go buy an oatmeal bath for my skin so that way, if i'm going to have to deal with the pain anyways, I may as well get some benefit out of it.

I went to the store and bought Aveeno Active Naturals 100% Natural Collodial Oatmeal.  The box came with 8 pouches of oatmeal and was instructed to pour the oatmeal under the running water.  I filled the tub, got in and there ended up being very little sting from the water.  When you pour the oatmeal into the tub, you will get some balls of powder that didn't separate and as I was in the tub, I would grab the balls and rub them on the crease of my elbows and anywhere newly sored.  Because I was so newly scratched, I opened another pouch and used about half of it by putting the oatmeal directly on my skin and adding extra oatmeal to the water.

Aveeno Colloidal Oatmeal Reduces Eczema Symptoms

I talked about collodial oatmeal on my other Aveeno post and how it is suppose to coat to the skin and sooth and relieve the symptoms.  I must say, this holds true to it's word.  One of the main reasons I decided to buy this product is because on the box, it says that this product is used specifically for eczema, which is very good.

After I soaked for about 30 minutes, I got out, patted myself dry, and I put on two different eczema lotions.  I used the Dermarest Medicated Lotion for my sore spots (underneath of the arms, crease of elbows, back of knees) and for the rest of my body I used a my Jergens Shea Butter.

I wore long sleeper pants instead of shorts and a long sleeve shirt to bed to keep the moisturizers on my skin as much as possible.  The next morning, I kid you not, the creases of my elbows looked normal again.  The redness was gone, they didn't hurt or itch.  I could walk without the back of my knees hurting.  This is one of my favorite counter-act treatments that I have done.  I did the same exact thing about a week after the first time and got the same results.  Just last night I took another bath because I had sweated again and scratched sores only this time I used a different lotion that was prescribed to me instead of the Dermarest.  However, I still used Jergens Shea Butter for the parts of my body that weren't sore.  I still have 3 pouches left and I can't wait to use them.

Try Aveeno Colloidal Oatmeal Bath Treatment

I recommend trying Aveeno Colloidal Oatmeal Bath.  It is very beneficial for people of all ages.  I definitely think if you have a child, that you should have them take an Aveeno Colloidal Oatmeal Bath before they go to bed.

Soap: If you have yet to find the soap that works for you, my top reccommendation for you is Sappo Hill Fragrance Free Natural Soap. It works wonders for me and my fellow family members and I am sure it will do the same for you.

If you have already tried the Sappo Hill, my next best suggestion would be Aveeno Active Naturals Moisturizing Bar. I have not tried this, however, if I had not found a soap that works for me, this is one I would try. It is the same as the oatmeal bath, just in bar form.

suave

Suave Cocoa Butter With Shea Body Lotion

Suave Cocoa Butter With Shea Body Lotion is a random lotion I tried one day for my eczema.  I tried it because I have always wanted a lotion with a vanilla smell to it, that I could put on my skin and know it wouldn't irritate it.  I am always anxious to have a smell other than the smell of medicated lotions.  Another plus as to why I bought it, is because it was a huge bottle for a very cheap price.

Suave Cocoa Butter Is Not Meant For Eczema

To start, let me say, this lotion is NOT fragrance free.  The fragrance in it is called Parfum, for those of you who know exactly what you are allergic to.  Like I said above, I wanted to try a lotion that doesn't smell like the normal medicated eczema skin creams and lotions.
It has a vanilla-ish smell to it.  Vanilla is one of my favorite smells, so this worked out pretty well for me.  It is cream colored and very soft and gentle.  It is not meant for eczema.  The purpose of this lotion is to soften and smooth dry and rough skin. (Keep in mind, rough skin for "normal" people.)

No Eczema Irritations, But Be Cautious

I have used this lotion for more than a month and put it all over my body and luckily, it has not once irritated my skin.  However, I have not put it on open wounds and if my skin seems to start breaking out or being very irritable, I didn't use it.  If I scratched the night before, I made sure to skip those spots and put a medicated lotion on it.  I understand if you would be hesitant to try a lotion of fragrance, but if you are like me, you want to have the choice of a pretty smell every once in a while, and Suave – Cocoa Butter is the lotion I would recommend for that purpose.

It's Cheap!

If your case of eczema is not so severe and you would like to try something that smells nice, I would recommend trying this product. Not because it's all mighty and will definitely help your eczema, but because if it works for you, it is very cheap. If you go to learn more, you will find that a large 18 ounce bottle after shipping is still under $10. If it ends up working for you, you may be that lucky one who doesn't have to shovel out tons of money all the time =P

That's why I include lotions such as this one that aren't made specifically for eczema.

dermarest eczema 2Dermarest– Eczema Medicated Moisturizer For Sensitive Skin is another eczema lotion I have used for a couple of years now.

Dermarest For Eczema: Stinky Smell, AWESOME Lotion

The only downfall for this lotion is the smell.  I hate the smell.  When I put Dermarest on, I turn my head and try not to breathe it in.  But then again, what smells bad to me, may smell good to someone else. But if you don't like the smell just as I don't, the sacrifice is very beneficial.

Dermarest Moisturizer is white and goes on smoothly and gently.  It rubs into the skin and doesn't linger on top. Another benefit to the eczema lotion is that it is made for eczema. (There are also others made for other skin diseases, such as psoriasis, which I have added into another post.)

It does not sting. It is a medicated lotion. I found that the best time for me to put it on was at night. (That seems to be the best time for any medicated eczema lotion). I would take a shower and as soon as I got out I would use a whole tube of Dermarest and put it on every single part of my body. I would put a long sleeve shirt on to keep the lotion on my skin, and right before I went to bed I would re-apply it and let it work overnight–which is what Dermarest is for.

Dermarest Medicated Moisturizer Will Help Improve Your Eczema

Dermarest does work.  If not in the first night, it should work within the week. My skin would have hardly any redness at all when I would wake up and I could see sores beginning to close. The lotion says it is designed to stop the itchiness, but I really don't think there is any eczema skin cream or lotion that actually gets rid of the itchiness. That's something you have to take control of yourself. At least, that is how it is for me.

Have More Than One Eczema Moisturizer

This is a lotion that I recommend because it is a lotion that you can use forever. It is not a steroid and does not have any negative side effects. This eczema lotion is one that you can utilize as a part of your lotions that you use on a daily basis. The best thing for anyone to do, and I strive to say this whenever I get the chance, is to use AT LEAST 2-3 different moisturizers for your skin. There is nothing worse than having an eczema cream or lotion that works the best for you and then you grow immune to it. Finding more than one moisturizer that works is critical, which is why I write reviews, to give others a greater outlook on eczema moisturizers that help.

Please, please, please give Dermarest for eczema a try. You won't regret it!

dermarest eczemaThere are plently of Dermarest products.

Another one that I want to talk about is Dermarest– Eczema Medicated Lotion.

About Dermarest Eczema Medicated Lotion

This eczema lotion has a clear-ish look to it.  The smell is not as intense as Dermarest- Medicated Moisturizer.  Even though the bottle says it is a lotion, I don't view it as a lotion.  I view it as a clear, greasy-like substance, but at the same time, it's not really greasy.  It's hard to explain this product.  I think it works just as good as the moisturizer for eczema does.  The only difference really is how the two feel on your skin.

Be Aware Of Steroids In Eczema Creams And Lotions

The ingredients all mix together really well to give you some relief, and sense of being healed and less itchiness.  The bottle says the active ingredient is Hydrocortisone 1%, which is a popular steroid for eczema.  You shouldn't apply this lotion more than 3 or 4 times daily.  Your skin will grow immune to the steroid and the product will stop working for you.  That actually applies to any eczema skin cream or lotion.  The more you use it, you will grow immune and have to jump around.  That's why I keep a huge box of skin creams and lotions, for when I grow immune to one product, I can jump to another.  But that's not the only reason you shouldn't constantly apply it.  Steroids may make your skin thicker or even thinner, and have many side effects to worry about.  I have used the product for a long time and take breaks in between using it, and luckily my skin hasn't been harmed from the side effects.  Just don't over do it.

Dermarest For Eczema Is A Must Try!

You should definitely try out one of the two Dermarest products for eczema.  This one normally comes in a 4 oz bottle and the moisturizer comes in a 2 oz bottle–Both Work Great!  The price ranges to about $10. Compared to other lotions, you can get a lot more of the product for $10, but the quality may not be as great as this one. Dermarest works great and if you are on that adventure of finding your lotion, then this is a must see, must have, must try.

Dermarest    For   Psoriasis

dermarest psoriasis

Dermarest Products Are Amazing!

I don't have psoriasis, but I know the Dermarest for Eczema helped me a lot.  And with the Dermarest brand being so great, I would only assume that Dermarest for Psoriasis would help someone who suffers from psoriasis.

Dermarest Psoriasis And Dermarest Eczema Are Very Similar

I do own the product, but have never used it.  I can say though, that it feels exactly like the Dermarest medicated moisturizer product.

I have researched and found that Dermarest for psoriasis is a salicylic acid topical, which causes shedding of the outer layer of skin.  It is non-greasy, and is suppose to control flaking, scaling, and crusting of the skin.  A lot is in common with the Dermarest for eczema when it says it relieves redness, itchiness, and provides immediate relief, which makes sense because they are both dermarest products.

Dermarest For Psoriasis Helps Acne!

This particular product, as I have read from random comments on it, is suppose to be really good for acne because of the salicylic acid topical that is in it. Almost every page I have come across mentions how Dermarest for psoriasis will help those who suffer with bad acne and will last a lot longer than other acne creams. (I made my boyfriend try it for his. xD Hope it works.)

Dermarest for Psoriasis will help with irritation of the skin, the same way Dermarest for Eczema helps eczema. Dermarest for Psoriasis also seems to help in other ways than what it is meant for, which is a major plus!

jergens shea butter

Jergens Shea Butter Is Great For Summer Time

I mostly use this lotion mainly during the summer.  It's best to use a thicker eczema cream or lotion during the winter, and a thinner one during the summer time.  Therefore, I use Jergens Shea Butter because it is a thinner lotion.

I was reluctant to use this lotion at first because it is not fragrance free.  The best lotions to use are fragrance free and I did not want the fragrance in the shea butter to cause my skin to flare.  I tested it out on my wrist, and nothing happened, so I took the chance and put it on my whole body and it did not cause and redness or flare at all.  It turns out, this is one of my most used lotions.

Pretty Smell, Inexpensive, Great Moisturizer For Eczema

The scent smells really good, in my opinion.  It's a nice lotion that keeps you moisturized and you don't have the medicated smell on you all the time.  However, i'm sure your skin is a lot like mine and soaks up lotion in the blink of an eyemaking it so you have to continuously re-apply the lotion to your skin.  But I think this lotion is worth the time and effort.  The price is really cheap, and you get a good amount for the price being so low.  It's cheaper than a lot of other eczema skin creams and lotions, causing me to use it a lot more all year long because I can constantly have it.  Other lotions are gone through so fast, and they cost so much, it's hard to always have the product on me.  If you haven't tried Jergens Shea Butter yet, I highly recommend you do.

Try it! It's Cheap!

When you buy this product, you get a 16.8 ounce bottle for less than $10. That makes this product a must try. If it works for you, you don't have to worry so much and you wont have to shovel out constant money trying to find what you're looking for. That is the whole point of our journey. Finding our own personal cure.

When you click the Save Now button, you will be able to purchase 3 of these large bottles for about $23. You would be saving about $4 on your third bottle =)

Eucerin

Eucerin-Calming Creme is one of my favorite and most used eczema skin cream.

Eucerin Calming Creme Reduces Redness By Half

The only downfall of this cream is that it STINGS.  When I apply the lotion onto my body, I have to do it by parts.  The sting is too much for me to handle at once.  However, it does actually do what it says it does. The bottle reads "Dry Skin Therapy, Clinically proven effective for dry, itchy skin."  This type of Eucerin is a calming cream, as it says on the bottle.  If you apply this lotion onto your skin, looking past the sting, it reduces redness by half. (As long as you aren't scratching it.)  It is thick and is definitely a great moisturizer and is fragrance free–which is very important when you are looking for eczema skin creams and lotions to apply to your skin.

Eucerin Calming Creme Improves Skin Appearance

Place this cream all over your body, even the spots without eczema, as much as you can.  After you shower, put it on.  Before you go to bed, put it on.  When you wake up, put it on.  What I don't like about most creams is that I feel sticky afterwards.  This lotion is not and does not make you feel sticky.  It makes my skin feel as normal as it can get, and at times, when I wasn't flaring, it has even helped me clear up my skin.  It definitely improves the appearance skin.

The price is fairly cheap. The eucerin calming creme takes up a lot of my money, because I am constantly using it and having to buy more.  Of all the eczema skin creams and lotions, this is the one you should try if you haven't already.

Buy Eucerin Calming Creme And Save

If you are consistent with a specific lotion for your eczema, you save money by buying in larger amounts.  For example, let's say one bottle of Eucerin is $10. You may find a deal of two Eucerin Calming Creme bottles for $17.  Technically, that means you buy one bottle and save $3 on the second bottle. Now, you may think $3? That's not a lot. However, if you saved 3 dollars each time you buy your lotion, (3+3+3+3) equals enough to buy a whole new bottle.

Sometimes you can subscribe to certain places and save even more money and have a constant flow of your favorite or most consistent eczema skin cream or lotion.
